tvOS 17: FaceTime, Find My Remote and more features

The main FaceTime interface on Apple TV will intelligently center speakers and even adapts the frame if others join in. As part of an upcoming tvOS 17 update, a new FaceTime app will be made available that uses your iPhone or iPad camera to bring video calls to your big-screen TV. Finally, Apple TV will receive FaceTime, which will work with the iPhone’s Continuity Camera and mic to do video conferencing. This feature will also let you bump FaceTime calls from another device to the TV and do SharePlay sessions to watch movies together.
In this way, AirPlay will take into account the accessories that we use the most to suggest them. The Apple Vision Pro will also have video capability and allow users to delve into Apple Immersive Video. Its two ultra-high-resolution display will allow 180-degree high-resolution recordings with Spatial Audio.
Later this year, popular video conferencing apps like Webex by Cisco and Zoom will also make their debut. Developers have the opportunity to leverage the Continuity Camera APIs on Apple TV 4K to integrate the iPhone or iPad camera and microphone into their tvOS app. With an updated SharePlay experience for the living room, you can now see your friends watch along with your content on the TV in a split-screen layout. With tvOS 17, You can use SharePlay to watch shows and movies together on the Apple TV in a split-screen mode, or Apple Music Sing, to sing your favorite tracks while at your TV. You’ll also be able to use your iPhone to locate a lost Siri Remote (second generation) and use memories from Apple Photos as your Apple TV screen saver.
While Apple did not specify which Apple TV devices will be compatible with tvOS 17, our feeling is that it may phase out any boxes that aren’t 4K. Any small external drive can back up your files, but most aren’t particularly secure. A significant update to tvOS is FaceTime to let people communicate face-to-face with their friends and family. Beginning in autumn, Apple TV 4K users will have the opportunity to utilize the newly introduced FaceTime app on their Apple TV. Dolby Vision 8.1 support, which offers Apple TV 4K users a more cinematic visual experience with dynamic metadata over a broader range of movies and TV shows will also be introduced.
The introduction of Split View for ‌Apple TV‌ lets users enjoy watching shows or movies together during a SharePlay session while also seeing everyone on the ‌FaceTime‌ call. ‌Apple TV‌ 4K users can take advantage of the new ‌FaceTime‌ app on ‌Apple TV‌ and initiate calls directly from ‌Apple TV‌, or start calls on ‌iPhone‌ or iPad, and hand them off to ‌Apple TV‌. Since no Apple TV boxes have a camera of their own, it will wirelessly sync up with an iPhone or iPad with Continuity Camera.
TvOS 17 is currently available as a developer beta, and it will be available as a free software update in the autumn. Developers can now try out tvOS 17 by enrolling their Apple TV in the Apple Developer Program. More details on how to get the beta update can be found on the Apple Developer website. Apple says that tvOS 17 will be released for everyone this fall, while a public beta is expected to be released by July. All of the ‌FaceTime‌ features are available, including Center Stage to keep you front and center, plus there are new gesture-based reactions that let you use your hands to generate on-screen effects. For example, if you make a heart with your hands, the screen will display hearts. With the slider, you can tweak the volume to either blend your voice with the singer’s or drop them out completely to go solo. Background vocals are also viewable independently from the main vocals for budding backup singers to follow more easily, and a Duet view separates multiple singers’ lyrics on opposite sides of the screen. The tvOS 17 FaceTime app will have many of the same capabilities as the iPhone and iPad versions, such as Centerstage, which allows you to be be perfectly framed in the center of your camera feed. You will also be able to use gestures to create effects and SharePlay streaming video from any app that supports it.
